Lighting and shooting commercial beauty in the studio

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

We will spend a 5 hour day at my Los Angeles photo studio gaining hands-on experience lighting for and shooting commercial quality beauty images. We will use some of the exact same lighting that I use for my own beauty images.

You can’t do commercial quality beauty without the right face, that’s why we will be shooting with a professional model. The right makeup is also critical to producing pro results. We are providing a professional makeup artist to create that perfect look. Attendance is capped at 6-7, so everyone gets the necessary one-on-one time with the model to create great images.

Who is it for?

This workshop is targeted for photographers at all skill levels who wish to learn or become better at producing commercial level beauty imaging. All while enhancing their portfolio with striking imagery. It is also for those who may not have access to, nor the time to coordinate all the components that are required to achieve professional level results.

Photographers are expected to know how to use their camera and create acceptable exposure. I will be tethered to a computer running Capture One Pro during the workshop, so you’ll be able to view shots from my camera on the computer screen to help you set optimal camera exposure settings.

What will I learn?

  • Model sourcing and selection – working with fashion agencies
  • The right makeup for your beauty image – why elaborate concepts aren’t necessarily best
  • Tethered shooting and how it will elevate your work
  • Lighting for beauty with fast/color-consistent Profoto and the unique Mola Rayo reflector
  • Setup and mentoring by John Allan

What do i bring?

You virtually just show up with your camera, the difficult work is already done for you. Model and team are in place. The lighting is set up. Everything is shoot ready. You just need to bring the following:

  • Camera
  • Pocket Wizard (I have a few extras if you don’t have one)
  • Memory card for your camera.
  • Yourself, enthusiastic and ready to shoot

How can I use the images?

The images you create can be used for non-commercial purposes only. Permissible use includes: portfolio and other collateral intended to showcase your work as a photographer. You may also post your work to social media or submit for editorial publication. You may not use the images for commercial purposes such as advertising a product or service. These are essentially model tests and no model release is signed. Please do not present the models with a release or other contract to sign. This is not permitted. If you require commercial usage of the images, please let us know ahead of time. Usually commercial usage can be negotiated with the agency.

What does it cost?

The total cost of the workshop is only $395 per photographer for the day.

We must receive your deposit of 50% to confirm your spot – the balance must be received prior to the day of the event. Remember there are only 6-7 spots for photographers. So reserve early to insure your participation.

Payment can be by personal or business check or cash. You may also pay by credit card but there is an additional small convenience fee. Deposits are non-refundable.

What is the day’s schedule?

We will begin at 1pm with orientation and hair and makeup and will wrap no later than 6pm.

This will provide a 5 hour day of activity including discussion and shooting.
